چکیده

W e study the problem of rebalancing a replicated tree, while the tree is concurrently being updated in a P2P manner. Tree updates are asynchronous and commutative, as we aim at eventual consistency. However, rebalancing requires strong synchronisation, because only replicas that have performed the same rebalances can communicate with one another. In order to scale to large networks, we propose to break this synchronisation into two parts: commitment within a small core of replicas, followed by asynchronous, pairwise catch-up protocol between replicas at different rebalance numbers. We state the requirements and correctness conditions for this distributed algorithm, and propose a correct solution.

Amortization Results for Chromatic Search Trees, with an Application to Priority Queues

The intention in designing data structures with relaxed balance, such as chromatic search trees, is to facilitate fast updating on shared-memory asynchronous parallel architectures. To obtain this, the updating and rebalancing have been uncoupled, so extensive locking in connection with updates is avoided. In this paper, we prove that only an amortized constant amount of rebalancing is necessar...

Chromatic Search Trees Revisited Institut F Ur Informatik | Report 91

Relaxed balancing of search trees was introduced with the aim of speeding up the updates and allowing a high degree of concurrency. In a relaxed version of a search tree the rebalancing operations are uncoupled from the updates and may be delayed. Using local transformations the rebalancing can be performed concurrently with updates and search operations. In this paper we revisit the rebalancin...

Relaxed Balanced Red-Black Trees

Relaxed balancing means that, in a dictionary stored as a balanced tree, the necessary rebalancing after updates may be delayed. This is in contrast to strict balancing meaning that rebalancing is performed immediately after the update. Relaxed balancing is important for efficiency in highly dynamic applications where updates can occur in bursts. The rebalancing tasks can be performed gradually...

Optimal Rebalancing of Binary Search Trees

We give, for any reasonable function f, a scheme for rebalancing a binary search tree with amortized O(f(n)) work per update while guaranteeing a height bounded by dlog(n+1)+1=f(n)e for all n. As a corollary, in the semi-dynamic case, height dlog(n+1)e can be guaranteed with amortized O(log n) work per insertion. Both results match existing lower bounds, and hence provide an exact characterizat...

Efficient Rebalancing of Chromatic Search Trees

In PODS’91, Nurmi and Soisalon-Soininen presented a new type of binary search tree for databases, which they call a chromatic tree. The aim is to improve runtime performance by allowing a greater degree of concurrency, which, in turn, is obtained by uncoupling updating from rebalancing. This also allows rebalancing to be postponed completely or partially until after peak working hours. The adva...
